Description:

Rural maternity care often requires clinicians to work at the edge of limited resources, autonomy, and legal responsibility creating high stakes situations. This session explores medico-legal risks, accountability, and access issues, providing guidance on informed consent, shared decision-making, and collaborative care. Attendees will gain strategies for navigating difficult and complex scenarios, while maintaining patient safety and professional accountability.

Objectives:

  • Identify key medico‑legal risks unique to rural maternity care arising from limited resources and fragmented continuity of care.
  • Develop effective communication strategies to navigate difficult conversations involving informed consent and informed refusal in the context of maternal care.
  • Integrate collaborative care practices across provider teams to support safe maternity care transitions in rural settings.

Speaker: Dr. Jessica Dy
